Banquet honors four

The 10th annual Helen Rubar Memorial Peace Scholarship will be presented to four graduating seniors at the 4th annual Peace Banquet on June 4 at 7 p.m.

The Banquet will be hosted by the PeaceWeavers at their Thunder Mountain Retreat Sanctuary at 8125 Crouse Road outside of Bath. The recipients who will be honored include: Jessica Sokolowski from Haverling High School, Hannah Catherman, Stacie Draper and Amanda Secondo from Hammondsport High School.

The Peace Banquet will feature a Mexican fiesta dinner and speeches by each of the recipients. The cost of the Banquet is $15 per adult and $5 for teens and kids. All proceeds go to the Scholarship Fund. Anyone interested in attending should make a reservation by calling 607-776- 4060 by Friday, Ma y 30. Anyone unable to attend but who would like to support the Scholarship or wish to send a contribution ahead of time, should make a check out to the Helen Rubar Memorial Fund and send to 8125 Crouse Road, Bath, NY 14810.

The scholarship is cosponsored by the PeaceWeavers and the Bath Peace and Justice Group, who have been working for peace with justice for a combined total over 40 years locally and nationally. Their efforts range from supporting individuals and families to live more healthy, peaceful, and sustainable lives to hosting speakers about current local and global issues. The inspiration behind the award comes from former Bath resident Helen Rubar who worked as a nurse anesthetist at Ira Davenport Hospital. She was a beloved figure who demonstrated great devotion to her community, her church, the nation and planet through countless hours of volunteer work. She died in 1998.
