Support Constitution, not president In response to Jack Hager's letter, regardless of what one thinks of Mr. Cook's sign, I must take issue with Mr. Hager's statement that "I am called, as a citizen, to support any sitting President." I too am a Viet-Nam vet and as anyone who has served in the military should know, it is the Constitution that we take an oath to defend, not a President, let alone one who has disgraced our nation by implementing policies that include illegal war, domestic spying, abandoning focus on our real enemies and creating prisons of sexual humiliation and torture. These policies implemented during Bush's presidency are treasonous to the ideals that America has aspired to be the example of. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prisons are symbols of arrogantly depraved and repressive governments, having more in common with the brutality of a Saddam Hussein than a civilized democratic Republic.
I have heard far too often the opinion expressed that Bush is "a godly man" or "I support him because he is Christian." For the life of me I cannot believe that any true Christian or believer in the beautiful humanity of Christ's teachings would do other than hang their heads in sorrow and shame at Bush's actions. If the deceit and fear mongering by which the American people were led to war in Iraq have yet to fully sink in, maybe the misuse of our soldiers, the weakening of our military and the squandering of our treasure leading to the current economic decline will unmask this arrogant playboy and pretender to the throne for what he really is and what the Republican policies under him have done to our beloved country. |
