HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS .• So, here we are at June 1. With how many more months until January 1, 2009? Just six months. The year is half over! There are three special days on the June calendar. In order they include: June 14th, Flag Day; June 15, Father's Day; and June 21, First Day of Summer. • Earlier this month, there was a report here on the Steuben County Youth in Government final session that took place on May 13. "The students did a wonderful job at their final simulated legislative session of 2007-2008," said Program Adult Leader Richard McCandless. The following six resolutions, described in the previous article, passed unanimously: Resolution #1: Establishment of a County Inmate Work Program, by Charlene Carpenter and Brittany Wheeler, Prattsburgh; Resolution #2: Establishment of a Methane-to-Electricity Conversion Center, by Christopher Taft, Campbell-Savona; Resolution #3: Memorialize the State to Increase Pay for Jurors by LaKeshia McCloud, Ha verling; Resolution #4: Literacy Issue: An Initiative of Steuben County, by Joelle Lutz, Wayland-Cohocton; Resolution #5: Funding Major Repairs to County Route #85, by Michael Andreasen, Addison; Resolution #6: Establishing a Permanent Electronics Disposal Unit as an Addition to the Landfill, by Jason Keefer, Campbell- Savona. This reporter will be sharing more results in the upcoming weeks so readers may know how much these young people are learning about "real life"! The Steuben County Youth in Government program is sponsored by the Steuben County Youth Bureau and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services. • Hammondsport Central School sophomore Josh Snyder recently learned from the NYS High School Athletic Association that he has been selected as representative to the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 17-20. Snyder is one of only six student athletes selected from New York State to attend this allexpense paid leadership conference. The NSLC provides a forum for student and adult leaders to discuss contemporary issues facing education-based athletics and activities. Through interactive large- and small-group discussions, these young leaders will learn to promote respect, positive values, sportsmanship, teamwork, healthy lifestyles, community service, and perspective. College facilitators will deliver the curriculum and lead the delegates in their small-group discussions. In addition, the students will take part in a citywide service project that will benefit the Indianapolis metropolitan community. Delegates are expected to share what they learn at the conference with their home school and community. Josh has participated in soccer, wrestling, baseball, Student Council, and Academic All Stars. He is also class president, a High Honor Roll student, and was recently selected as Student of the Quarter. Congratulations to him for this honor! • Saturday, June 7, is the yearly Vine Ci ty Villagewide Yard Sale weekend. Homes and organizations will have sales you won't want to miss!
