The portable bus station
Morris street bus stop to be moved to Pulteney Square

BATH - If you're one of the growing number of people using the local public transportation system, keep your eye on the bus stop located near the corner of West Morris Street and Wilson Avenue.

It's about to move. Steuben County and Bath village officials are concerned pedestrians crossing West Morris Street in that area are at risk of being struck by vehicular traffic. The danger is acute when buses bound for Hornell, Hammondsport and Corning are parked at the bus stop, interrupting the line of site for vehicles entering West Morris Street from Wilson Avenue.

Village trustees last week authorized the removal of the bus stop station and its placement on the eastern side of East Pulteney Street, in front of the Steuben County Clerk's office. The station will be moved "in the near future," according to Jeff Muller, street supervisor for the Village of Bath.

Meanwhile, the village is working with the New York Department of Transportation to collect data on motor traffic along the West Morris Street route. Muller said the data would be used to determine whether a traffic control device, such as a blinking red light, would be useful at the Wilson Street intersection.

A crosswalk on West Morris Street is intended to protect pedestrians crossing the street; however, Muller noted there have been at least two car/pedestrian accidents in the area in recent years.
