Accentuating beauty after dark

There's a great sense of pride and pleasure when all the outdoor toil is completed and a beautiful summer morning splashes the neighborhood with color from your little slice of manicured paradise.

Unfortunately, neighbors can only admire that beauty as long as the sun's up. It all descends into darkness once it's time for the moon to shine.

According to landscaping expert Chris Robertson, many homeowners are purchasing outdoor lighting to help accentuate the beauty of a yard, even during those sunless evening hours.

"Outdoor lighting enhances both the appearance of your home and your landscaping, as well as the enjoyment you and your guests experience when you entertain outdoors."

Landscape expert Bill Locklin suggests homeowners use 12-volt outdoor lighting to bring out the features of large trees, specimen plants, architecture, water features and especially path lighting.

The latter, Locklin said, is especially important, "both for aesthetic and safety reasons. You, your family, and your guests should be able to safely move around your property after dark. Walkways should always be lighted both as a directional guide and to prevent people from tripping on obstacles."
