Bringing the outdoors inside:
Using water as a decorating tool

For some reason, the sound of running water works as a de-stressor for many people. Sitting beside a creek, bubbling brook or even a fountain, listening to the flowing water can work like a natural relaxant for people looking for an escape from their hectic world.
It's not surprising then, that people want to find ways to use water as a decorating tool in their homes.
A simple and easy way to do this is to use a small water or rock garden as a centerpiece within a living room or bedroom.
While some water gardens can be purchased at a variety of stores, homeowners may choose to make their own with a few materials.
The "ingredient" list for a water garden includes:
• A non-porous ceramic or metal container which is at least 10 inches in diameter and at least five inches deep. The pot needs to be at least this size, in order to accommodate the water pump.
• A platform for the water pump. It can be made from the green-porous material used by flower shops for floral arrangements.
• Decorations such as river stones, Spanish moss, pebbles, aquarium rocks and plants, decorative stones and flowers make for interesting "toppings."
• A water pump that fits inside the pot. Craft
and hardware stores will have a pump available for purchase.
• Tools, including one, which will cut the platform, and waterproof glue.
Once the "ingredients" are gathered, sketch a basic design for the water fountain.
Next, cut a small hole in the center of the platform and thread the water pump hose through it. When the fountain is completed, the platform will serve as a cover for the water pump. Be careful cutting the hole as pieces of the green foam can clog the pump once it is in use.
Camouflage the hose by having it go up a plant or another decoration. The hose also needs to go "up" so that it will cause the water to flow downward.
Using the waterproof glue, place the decorations inside and around the fountain. Spanish Moss can help give the fountain a finished look.
Then fill the container with water and plug in the pump. Now sit back and relax to the sound of water flowing through the fountain.
