HAMMONDSPORT - Chances are, someone you know has had some form of cancer.
If that's the case, mark your calendar for July 11, the opening day of the 2008 Bath-Hammondsport Relay for Life. The Relay, which this year will be held at Fireman's Park in Hammondsport, is an opportunity for cancer patients and survivors to gather with friends and family in a celebration of life - and to raise funds for ongoing cancer research.
This will be the ninth consecutive Relay for Life in central Steuben County, according to organizer Rita Hoover. The event has raised nearly $1 million in cancer research funds.
Nationally, the Relay for Life originated in 1985, when Dr. Gordon Klatt, a colorectal surgeon and avid runner, walked and ran around a Tacoma, Wash., track for 24 hours. He clocked 83 miles and raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society.
Klatt was joined the following year by 220 supporters organized in 19 teams for the overnight event, and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life was born.
The Bath-Hammondsport Relay will feature the traditional Survivor's Lap, kicking off the all-night event at 7 p.m. after opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. At 10 p.m. participants will light luminaria along the track in memory of people who have died from cancer, as well as in honor of cancer survivors.
Then the all-nighter begins.
Events will include a scavenger hunt, a frozen t-shirt contest and entertainment by DJ Jerry Karns, square dancing and live music. There also will be gift certificates for area restaurants, golf at Bristol Harbour, and passes to the Curtiss Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass.
A complete schedule for this year's Relay appears on page 2.
Can't join the Relay in person? Contributions made payable to the American Cancer Society may be given to Rita Hoover or Patricia Lauzze. For more information, call 346-2896 or 765- 1077.
