Barbara McNamara Benson
HOUSTON/TEXAS - Barbara McNamara Benson departed this world peacefully in Houston, Texas, June 1, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with breast cancer which she won for 18 years. She would like to offer special thanks to her Oncologist, Joel Abramowitz and his staff for their many years of compassionate and skilled treatment and care. She also thanks her primary care physician, Cyril Wolf, for his many years of wonderful care and good humor.
Barb was born in Bath, on November 23, 1942 to parents Helen and Charles McNamara. She grew up there where she was very athletic, a skilled roller skating dancer and an avid horse lover. She briefly attended State University College Cortland New York as a physical education major prior to her marriage and raising a family. Barb spent her married life in Dallas, Texas; Midland, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Damascus, Syria; and for the past 21 years in the Houston, Texas area. She loved life and was full of energy. Barb was a selfless person, had a great sense of humor, which she displayed to the end, and was loved by all who knew her. She was named Mardi Gras Queen in her subdivision in Kenner, Louisiana where she was known for her community service and tireless participation in Girl Scouts and youth athletic programs such as football, baseball and basketball. While in Syria, she also served as the Girl Scout Leader for an international troop with girls from many nations participating. While living in Katy, Texas, she worked in flower shops and loved delivering flowers to see the joy on peoples' faces.
Barbara is survived by a loving family including Brian, her loving husband of 42 years; daughter, Kimberly and husband Scott; son Brian and wife Karen; daughter, Jennifer; son Scott; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating Barbara's life was at Gateway Community Church in Webster, Texas, on June 14. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Barbara's name to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
