Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group

Bath Neighborhood Watch Group

The Bath Neighborhood Watch Group will meet the third Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Bath Municipal Building. The next meeting will be held July 16.

Bath Area Writers Group

The Bath Area Writers Group invites interested individuals to join their round table readings and critiques from 7-9 p.m. every second and forth Tuesday of every month in the Empire Room of the Dormann Library, W. Morris St., Bath. The next gathering will be July 22.

H-port legion monthly meetings

The Hammondsport American Legion Unit #407 will hold their monthly meeting the first Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. The next meeting will be held Aug. 3.

VEW enrollment

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, or if you know a child who meets this criteria, please contact Vernon E. Wightman Primary School regarding kindergarten enrollment. In addition, parents of children who will be four years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008 are requested to call the school about enrollment in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program.

Christian concerts Nite Lite Gospel House will host live Christian concerts for the family every Friday at 6 p.m. at the Christian Coffee House on Roosevelt Avenue in Bath. The next concert will be held on July 18. Music will be by Reign Song Trio.

Dormann Library events

Jay Mankita will present "The Day the Library Went Wild" at 2 p.m. July 18. Songs and stories will focus on recycling, rainforests and sustainable lifestyles-how each person can make a difference in the world.

Boys and Girls Car Campaign

Now that the price of scrap metal has sharply risen, the Boys and Girls Car Campaign will accept most any car with no restrictions. Cars will be picked up anywhere in New York, usually within a week, and are sold at auction.

To donate, call 800- 246-0493. Funds obtained by the sales go directly to help the New York clubs.

Mossy Bank nature center

The next event for the 2008 Ted Markham Nature Center Educational Series will be held at 10:30 a.m. July 19 at the Mossy Bank Park, Bath. Topic will be Pond Life presented by Marie Peek and Randy Weidner.

Volunteer mediators wanted

The Center of Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service orientated individuals that would be interested in becoming a volunteer mediator to volunteer their services in one of our three office in Steuben County. The qualities of life experience and common sense are at the utmost importance in the selection of these individuals. 20 new participants will be trained to help with the ever increasing case load on July 22, 23, 31 and Aug. 1. Community sensitive people are needed to help reduce conflict in Steuben County.

Pest management guidelines

Cornell Cooperative will provide their Cornell 2008 Pest Management Guideline for Berry Crops for $25 plus postage. Guidelines will include information such as: small fruit nutrient guidlelines; insect, mite, diseas, and weed management information; and cultural, biological and chemical control options. Family mediation

The Center of Dispute Settlement is offering the alternative of Mediation. The advantages are that Mediation is free to those 21 and younger, it is confidential, a neutral person helps to consider all options, it results in better communication between family members, it helps maintain control over family problems, and everybody has a chance to tell their side of the story. Mediation is an alternative to filing PINS. The service is available to anyt Steuben County resident or youth over the age of seven years old.

Cornell 2008 Pest Management Guidelines for Commercial Turfgrass is now available. Guide line includes turfgrass selection, fertilization, mowing and irrigation practices, insect, disease, weed and wildlife control. Book exchange and recycling

The Steuben County legislature has authorized a no charge collection week for book recycling. Books may be picked up, dropped off and exchanged by Steuben County residents. Paperbacks must be separated from hardcover books. Paperbacks will be accepted as part of newspaper recycling. Collection dates are as follows: • From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14-28 • From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 19

Telephone books, magazines, spiral notebooks, plastic covers on books, or plastic wrap on workbooks will not be accepted. School Books and Library books however will be accepted. Telephone books and magazines may be recycled with mixed paper recycling. Books will be collected at the Bath Landfill only.

Wine Country Toastmasters

The Wine Country Toastmasters will meet the first and third Tuesday of every month from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, 7009 Rumsey St. Extension, Bath. Housing needs survey

Arbor Development is a local community and housing development organization that has partnered with the Village of Bath on a number of community based projects. In 2003, they conducted the Bath Downtown Revitalization Initiative feasibility study that included the neighborhoods from Washington Boulevard to West Morris St. and Liberty St. to Cruger St.

Commencing immediately and continuing for the next several weeks, Arbor Development staff and volunteers will be conducting a housing needs survey in the same neighborhood that will help them identify the impact of their work so far. The survey results will also help Arbor Development Staff and the Village of Bath Trustees to identify future projects and needs. Results of the survey will be made available through the Bath Police Department and the Mayor's Office in early Sept. 2008. Individuals conducting the survey will have a letter from Chief David K. Rouse in their possession. For questions call the Bath Police Department.

Keuka Lake art show

The 42nd Annual Keuka Lake Art Show will be July 12 and 13 on the Village Square in Hammondsport. The art show is sponsored by Keuka Lake Association. Artists in the categories of watercolor (professional and amateur), oil and acrylics (professional and amateur), pottery, sculpture, drawing and graphics, jewelry and photography are eligible to exhibit in the show.

Student artists in both high school and college may enter the show under a reduced entry fee and are eligible for the Jeanne M. Lent Memorial Art Awards.

Sanctuary tours

The First Presbyterian Church of Bath will hold sanctuary tours on Wednesdays July 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tour guides will be on hand.

Safe boating course

The Steuben County Sheriff 's Navigation patrol will offer the New York State Safe Boating course will be from 6-9 p.m. July 22 and July 24 at the Hammondsport Fire Hall, State Route 54, Hammondsport. There is no admission fee and attendance at both sessions is mandatory in order to receive a boating safety certificate. Enrollment is encouraged for anyone over the age of 10. The classroom instruction will consist of lecture, slide presentation and training videos. Call 1-800- 724-7777 to pre-register for the course.

Golf tournament

Marty Simpson benefit A benefit for Marty Simpson well be from 1-7 p.m. July 27 at the Hammondsport Fire Hall. A donation of $10 at the door will include a meal. Event will include DJ, raffles, 50/50, and cake wheel. Live music will be by 3SB from Bath, LegendZ and Bud Mud Crik. Marty was diagnosed in April with cancer and is recovering from extensive surgery on June 27. Money raised at the benefit would go help with home, medical and travel expenses. AARP and the St. James Mercy Health System have teamed up to offer the 55 Alive Mature Driving Course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be from 1-5 p.m. July 29 and July 31 in the hospitals Memorial Conference Room.

Participants who complete the 8-hour classroom refresher course may receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their license. The cost is $10 and seating is limited.

Bath Haverling Board of Education

The reorganization and regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Bath Central School District will be July 14 at the District office. The reorganization meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Following the reorganization meeting the regular meeting of the board of education will be held.

Seeking Christian poets from Bath

A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a special poetry contest sponsored by the Christian Fine Arts Society, free to everyone. Artist's reception

An Artist's Reception will be from 5-7 p.m. July 18 at Yates County Arts Center, 119 E. Elm Street, Penn Yan. Karen Rosasco will talk about her wonderful watermedia art work that is presently featured at the YCAC Gallery. She will discuss her creative process and techniques and will be available for one-onone discussions with attendees. Complimentary refreshments, wine and punch will be available. This event is free and open to the public.

Car show to benefit SPCA

A classic car show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 in the village park of Savona to benefit the Finger Lakes SPCA. Admission is a financial contribution to the SPCA. SPCA representatives will be present with pets who have been approved for adoption. Visitors can admire classic cars and leave with a new member of the family.
