HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

• The 41st Annual Art Show in the Hammondsport Village Square and business district began yesterday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and goes on today, the 13th, from 12-5 p.m. There will be oils, acrylics, watercolors, drawings, graphics, sculptural pottery, jewelry and photographs by both amateur and professional exhibitors. Jeanne M. Lent Student Awards are presented during the show. There was live music on Saturday afternoon starring the Fran Morgan Trio. Today, Sunday, from 1-3 p.m. Bill Groome performs. There are also children's art activities under the direction of Tony Moretti and Gwen Quigley throughout both days.

• This is a busy, busy week. From Friday, July 18, through next Sunday the 20th is the annual Antique Boat Show down at the head of Keuka Lake. More about this event next week.

• There is an Open House today, July 13, from 1- 5 p.m. at the PeaceWeavers Thunder Mountain Retreat and Wellness Center, 8125 Crouse Road, Bath. Tour their 250 acres with incredible views of the Southern Tier. See model natural buildings (timber framed with straw bales, and so forth). Eat delicious vegetarian appetizers and drink "wheat grass blasts." Save money with the Natural Foods Buying Club and organic farm. Learn about wellness services, upcoming retreats and events. • The Summer Concert series presented by Hammondsport Five-Star Bank continues with a performance on Thursday, July 17, by Captain Jack's Blues Band in the Hammondsport Park Grandstand from 6-8 p.m.

• Saturday, July 19, the 106th annual banquet of the Hammondsport Alumni Association is being held at and by the Hammondsport Firemen at their hall on Route 54. The business meeting will elect two needed officers for next year - vice president and secretary for two-year terms each. The business meeting is at 5 p.m. Social hour with hors d'oeuvres and beverages begins at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Here is a special note from this year's new president, Richard "Patche" Brady: "Yes, it has finally happened - between Bill Fries and Bob Shuart, I think it was a setup. I am your new president, so treat me nicely, please!"

• Hammondsport Firemen's Carnival opened at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, running through Saturday, July 5. The closing night's fireworks over the lake were just amazing, as usual. We wish to thank the firemen for this annual treat.

• At Hammondsport Central School, the Summer Learning Program began earlier this month and is running until Friday, July 25. "School" begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m. each day. Daily attendance is checked and student absences are very, very disruptive and take away so much from the effectiveness of the program. Please contact Mrs. Tollerup in the bus garage or Mrs. Groves in the primary office with any questions about students getting picked up for school.

Hammondsport Teacher's Association (HTA) began to take part in the Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup program in 1991 and is still participating. Adopt-AHighway is one of New York State's most successful programs to promote volunteer involvement in communities. Four times a year, members of the HTA volunteer to clean up litter from their designated section of the roadway, improving quality and making the roadway throughout the village more attractive.

• Fourth grader Cameron Drain has been selected to attend the National Young Scholars Program this summer. The program is designed and created especially for the nation's most highly acclaimed second, third, fourth and fifth grade students with a history of academic achievement and leadership potential. All students who attend NYSP can choose one of several strands of study, including medicine, CSI (crime scene investigation), construction and more. Cameron chose the "Weather Station Earth in the Eye of the Storm" strand, where he will simulate a scientific study of the effects of climate change on the atmosphere, winds and ocean currents. Cameron was nominated by fourth grade teacher Katie Nichiporuk. This year's sixday program will be held at Union College in Schenectady, New York. • Hammondsport Central School retired teachers and staff will meet for their monthly breakfast on Wednesday, July 16, at 9 a.m. at the Chat-A-Whyle in Bath.

• Songwriter/guitarist Jay Mankita will be visiting the Fred and Harriet Taylor Memorial Library here in Hammondsport on Thursday, July 17, at 3 p.m. and the Dormann Library in Bath on Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. What's happening is the libraries are going wild on BUGS. Call 569- 2045 in the Hammondsport and 776-4613 in Bath for more delightful information.

• A community-wide blood drive by the American Red Cross will be held on Thursday, July 17, at the 'Port Fire Station on Route 54, beginning at 11:30 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. In light of the horrible devastation from flooding and tornadoes in the Midwest and now fires in California, the Red Cross desperately needs blood. Call Eleanor at 569-2063 to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome but must bring a photo ID.

• The Steuben County Legislature has authorized a No Charge Collection Week for book recycling. Books may be picked up, dropped off and exchanged by Steuben County residents. Paperbacks should be separated from hardcover books and placed with newspaper recycling. Collection days are Monday, July 14 through Friday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to Noon. Books collected only at the Bath Landfill at 5632 Turnpike Road in Bath. Accepted: school books and library books. Not accepted: telephone books, magazines, spiral notebooks, plastic covers on books, plastic wrap on workbooks. Telephone books and magazines may be recycled with mixed paper recycling. Questions - please contact Bonnie Kastner, Steuben County Dept of Public Works, Recycling Manager, at 664- 2471.

All parishioners of St. Gabriel's are members of the Parish Forum and are encouraged to come and participate today, July 13, in McGill Hall after the 11 a.m. mass.

Catholic Charities are having a second collection this weekend, July 12 and 13, by our own Laura Opelt, Director of Catholic Charities of Steuben County. She will speak at all of our masses on the work that Catholic Charities does in Steuben County to strengthen families, reduce poverty and build community. Your donation will help with this effort.

As an expression of our gratitude to the Knights of Columbus for their generous support of St. Gabriel's over the years, we have asked that the 8 a.m. mass next Sunday, July 20, be said for the intentions of our local Knights of Columbus chapter. There will be a coffee hour following the 8 a.m. mass to allow parishioners the opportunity to personally thank the members. If you can help with the coffee hour, sign up on the sheet in the back of the church.

• St. James Episcopal: Located on the corner of Main and Lake Streets. The Rev. Sandra Curtis, Rector; Sunday Eucharist and Sunday School are at 9 a.m., followed by Coffee Hour. Thursday at 12:15 p.m., Holy Eucharist; Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m.
