H-portlegion monthly meetings The Hammondsport American Legion Unit #407 will hold their monthly meeting the first Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. The next meeting will be held Aug. 3. VEW enrollment If you have a child who will be five years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, or if you know a child who meets this criteria, please contact Vernon E. Wightman Primary School regarding kindergarten enrollment. In addition, parents of children who will be four years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008 are requested to call the school about enrollment in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program. Boys and Girls Car Campaign Now that the price of scrap metal has sharply risen, the Boys and Girls Car Campaign will accept most any car with no restrictions. Cars will be picked up anywhere in New York, usually within a week, and are sold at auction. To donate, call 800-246-0493. Funds obtained by the sales go directly to help the New York clubs. Cornell Guideline Series • Cornell Cooperative will provide their Cornell 2008 Pest Management Guideline for Berry Crops for $25 plus postage. Guidelines will include information such as: small fruit nutrient guidlelines; insect, mite, diseas, and weed management information; and cultural, biological and chemical control options. Mossy Bank nature center The next event for the 2008 Ted Markham Nature Center Educational Series will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Mossy Bank Park, Bath. Family mediation The Center of Dispute Settlement is offering the alternative of Mediation. The advantages are that Mediation is free to those 21 and younger, it is confidential, a neutral person helps to consider all options, it results in better communication between family members, it helps maintain control over family problems, and everybody has a chance to tell their side of the story. Mediation is an alternative to filing PINS. The service is available to anyt Steuben County resident or youth over the age of seven years old. Book exchange and recycling The Steuben County legislature has authorized a no charge collection week for book recycling. Books may be picked up, dropped off and exchanged by Steuben County residents. Paperbacks must be separated from hardcover books. Paperbacks will be accepted as part of newspaper recycling. Collection dates are as follows: • From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20-28 • From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 19 Telephone books, magazines, spiral notebooks, plastic covers on books, or plastic wrap on workbooks will not be accepted. School Books and Library books however will be accepted. Telephone books and magazines may be recycled with mixed paper recycling. Books will be collected at the Bath Landfill only. Volunteer mediators wanted The Center of Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service orientated individuals that would be interested in becoming a volunteer mediator to volunteer their services in one of our three office in Steuben County. The qualities of life experience and common sense are at the utmost importance in the selection of these individuals. 20 new participants will be trained to help with the ever increasing case load on July 22, 23, 31 and Aug. 1. Housing needs survey Arbor Development is a local community and housing development organization that has partnered with the Village of Bath on a number of community based projects. In 2003, they conducted the Bath Downtown Revitalization Initiative feasibility study that included the neighborhoods from Washington Boulevard to West Morris St. and Liberty St. to Cruger St. Commencing immediately and continuing for the next several weeks, Arbor Development staff and volunteers will be conducting a housing needs survey in the same neighborhood that will help them identify the impact of their work so far. The survey results will also help Arbor Development Staff and the Village of Bath Trustees to identify future projects and needs. Results of the survey will be made available through the Bath Police Department and the Mayor's Office in early Sept. 2008. Individuals conducting the survey will have a letter from Chief David K. Sanctuary tours The First Presbyterian Church of Bath will hold sanctuary tours on Wednesdays July 23, 30 and August 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tour guides will be on hand. Safe boating course The Steuben County Sheriff's Navigation patrol will offer the New York State Safe Boating course from 6-9 p.m. July 22 and July 24 at the Hammondsport Fire Hall, State Route 54, Hammondsport. There is no admission fee and attendance at both sessions is mandatory in order to receive a boating safety certificate. Enrollment is encouraged for anyone over the age of 10. Marty Simpson benefit A benefit for Marty Simpson well be from 1-7 p.m. July 27 at the Hammondsport Fire Hall. A donation of $10 at the door will include a meal. Event will include DJ, raffles, 50/50, and cake wheel. Live music will be by 3SB from Bath, LegendZ and Bud Mud Crik. Marty was diagnosed in April with cancer and is recovering from extensive surgery on June 27. Money raised at the benefit would go help with home, medical and travel expenses. For more information call 382-6460. 55 Alive Driving Course AARP and the St. James Mercy Health System have teamed up to offer the 55 Alive Mature Driving Course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be from 1- 5 p.m. July 29 and July 31 in the hospitals Memorial Conference Room. Participants who complete the 8-hour classroom refresher course may receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their license. Car show to benefit SPCA A classic car show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 in the village park of Savona to benefit the Finger Lakes SPCA. Admission is a financial contribution to the SPCA. SPCA representatives will be present with pets who have been approved for adoption. Steuben County Fair entries Steuben County Fair entries need to be on file at the Bath Fair Office by Friday, August 1 for the Steuben County Fair to be held from August 12-17. The Steuben County Agricultural Society is encouraging individuals to enter their artwork that they are proud of. Monetary as well as ribbon prizes will be awarded in various categories. Bath street closures Bath Police Chief David K. Rouse reports the following street closures in the Village of Bath: • Lyon Street-On Monday, July 21 commencing at 6 a.m. and will be closed the entire day. Rain date is Tuesday, July 22. • Charles Street-Charles Street between Kingsley Street and Maple Heights will be completely closed to vehicular traffic commencing on Monday, July 21. The work on the street is expected to take one week. Road closers are taking place so that the Street Department can mill the surface of the streets and subsequently pave them. The Village of Bath apologizes for this inconvenience. Book signing A book signing on will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at the Curtiss Museum lobby, 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport.
