County Historical Society to host open house in old Babcock Hollow Schoolhouse

BATH - The Steuben County Historical Society will once again be welcoming visitors to the restored Babcock Hollow Schoolhouse during the Steuben County Fair, August 12-17.

The Society's One-Room School Project Committee has, to date, identified approximately 366 one-room school districts throughout the County in 1930, when centralizations of many small districts began.

Thanks to many concerned individuals, local researchers, town historians, and others, this important part of local Americana is being preserved by the Society in 19 volumes devoted to schoolhouse pictures, students and teachers for 192 of the County school districts recorded there.

The Society is appealing to the public for pictures and related information for the remaining 174 school districts in Steuben County, especially in the towns of Hornellsville, Pulteney, Rathbone, Troupsburg, West Union and Wheeler.

Pictures submitted to the Society will be returned to the owners upon request. Pictures or related information may be brought to the Magee House in Bath, NY or brought directly to the School House on the fairgrounds during fair week.
