Relay for Life a great success

On behalf of the American Cancer Society's 2008 Bath-Hammondsport Relay For Life, I would like to express my appreciation to local residents for their generosity and support. This year, 20 teams participated in the event, raising more than $58,000 for the American Cancer Society's programs of research, education, advocacy, and patient services. This outstanding support proves that the people of the Bath-Hammondsport area are truly committed to the fight against cancer.

I want to applaud the 155 cancer survivors who participated in the opening lap and survivor dinner sponsored by Snug Harbor Restaurant and Inn. They are the reason we continue the fight, because each year there can be more and more people living full lives following a diagnosis of cancer.

Over 5,000 beautifully decorated luminaria bags lit with candles were placed around the track the night of the relay. These represented a symbol of hope for cancer survivors and a reminder of those who lost their battle to cancer.

We also appreciate the efforts of the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make this event a success. Without their hard work in both planning and implementing the great ideas and activities, the Relay wouldn't have happened.

We also appreciate the generosity of this year's corporate sponsors and sponsors who donated items and food.

Without their help we would not have been as successful in raising so much for the fight against cancer.

Again, we appreciate everyone's support for the American Cancer Society. And remember, it's not too early to become involved in the 2009 Relay For Life.
