Bath Area Writers Group

H-port legion monthly meetings

The Hammondsport American Legion Unit #407 will hold their monthly meeting the first Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. The next meeting will be held Sept. 7.

VEW enrollment

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, or if you know a child who meets this criteria, please contact Vernon E. Wightman Primary School regarding kindergarten enrollment. In addition, parents of children who will be four years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008 are requested to call the school about enrollment in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) program.

Boys and Girls Car Campaign

Now that the price of scrap metal has sharply risen, the Boys and Girls Car Campaign will accept most any car with no restrictions. Cars will be picked up anywhere in New York, usually within a week, and are sold at auction.

To donate, call 800-246- 0493. Funds obtained by the sales go directly to help the New York clubs.

Cornell Guideline Series

• Cornell Cooperative will provide their Cornell 2008 Pest Management Guideline for Berry Crops for $25 plus postage. Guidelines will include information such as: small fruit nutrient guidlelines; insect, mite, diseas, and weed management information; and cultural, biological and chemical control options. Mossy Bank nature center

The next event for the 2008 Ted Markham Nature Center Educational Series will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Mossy Bank Park, Bath. The day event will include a family scavenger hunt.

Family mediation

The Center of Dispute Settlement is offering the alternative of Mediation. The advantages are that Mediation is free to those 21 and younger, it is confidential, a neutral person helps to consider all options, it results in better communication between family members, it helps maintain control over family problems, and everybody has a chance to tell their side of the story. Mediation is an alternative to filing PINS. The service is available to anyt Steuben County resident or youth over the age of seven years old.

Wine Country Toastmasters

The Wine Country Toastmasters will meet the first and third Tuesday of every month from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, 7009 Rumsey St. Extension, Bath. Seeking Christian poets from Bath

A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a special poetry contest sponsored by the Christian Fine Arts Society, free to everyone. 55 alive driving course

AARP and the St. James Mercy Health System are teaming up to offer the 55 Alive Mature Driving Course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 19 and Aug. 21 in the hospital's Memorial Conference room.

Participants who complete the 8-hour classroom refresher may receive a 10 percent discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their license. The cost is $10 and seating is limited.

The Grand Lodge of F&A Mason State of New York and the Child Identification Program (CHIP) will hold their third annual function for Safe Kids from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Chemung County Fairgrounds, 4-H Craft #8 Building, Horseheads. Bath Peace and Justice

The Bath Peace and Justice Book Discussion Circle will meet Wed., Aug. 13, at 7 p.m., in the Empire Room of the Dormann Library in Bath. The book we will discuss this month is Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, by Lester R. Brown (2008: Earth Policy Institute). A group member will provide a brief introduction to the book, followed by discussion. To provide everyone with an opportunity to speak, the discussion will be moderated. While reading the book prior to the discussion is not required, it helps enrich the discussion if some of those attending do so.

Family scavenger hunt

Mossy Bank Park will host a Family Scavenger Hunt from 1- 3 p.m. Aug 10. Children of all ages are welcome, and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and camera. Comfortable shoes and clothing are advisable. Guides will be available for those unfamiliar with the trails.

La Leche League

Retire Corning Police Officers Association

The Retired Corning Police Officers Association will meet at 5:30 p.m.Aug. 12 at The Central Restaurant in Painted Post. Chicken barbecue

2008 Artist Studio Tour

The Yates County Arts Center, 119 E. Elm Street, Penn Yan, is presenting its annual Artist Studio Tour for the weekend of Aug. 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive-yourself tour features 22 locally talented artists. Admission is free.

Bob Burns benefit

A benefit spaghetti dinner for Bob Burns who is suffering from brain cancer will be from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Bath Rod and Gun Club, 7771 Telegraph Rd., Bath. Donation is $10.
