Locals selected for NYS High School Baseball Teams award Four local youths from Bath, Avoca and Hammondsport Central Schools have been selected by the NYS Sportswriters for this year's New York State High School Baseball Teams award. This is a rare award given to the very best players in New York State. Mike Rossi, a junior P/1B, was selected to the New York State Class B 1st Team. This is the first time a Bath player has ever made the NYS 1st team in baseball. Mike hit .461 this past season with 37 RBI's as the Rams made a run to the Western Regionals in 2008. He was 6-0 as a pitcher this year with a 1.25 ERA. His career record on the hill at Bath is 14-2 in three season of varsity ball. Mike was a 1st Team All Star in D I Livi County, Bird's Eye Player of the Year for Livingston County, Class BB MVP, 1st Team All Greater Rochester, Hornell Tribune All Star, and Corning Leader's Player of the Year. Mike will return for his senior year of baseball in 2009 at Bath/Haverling High School. Brett Havens, a senior outfielder for Bath, was selected to the 3rd Team in NYS. He had a monster year at the plate hitting .536 for the Bath Rams Baseball team. Brett was the # 4 hitter in the line up and led the team in HR's (6), RBI's. (39), and stolen bases. (15) Brett was selected as the Co-MVP of Class BB in Livingston County along with Rossi. Brett was also recognized on the All Corning Leader 1st Team this year. Brett will take his talents to Finger Lakes Community College this fall in Canadaigua where he will provide a big bat in their line up! Joe Wallace, a senior P/SS from Avoca High School, was a 2nd team selection to the NYS Class D Team this season. Joe is no stranger to the NYS teams as he has been either on the 1st or 2nd teams since his sophomore season. Joe hit .444 for the Tigers this season and knocked in 18 runs. He was 7- 3 on the mound with a 1.80 ERA. He had an amazing career at Avoca and was 24-6 as a pitcher in his four seasons of varsity ball. Joe was the Division II Bird's Eye player of the year for Class D in Steuben County and made the All Tribune and All Leader teams. Joe will play baseball at Alfred State in college this coming season. Derek Baroody, a senior P/C for Hammonsdport, was selected to the NYS Class D 3rd Team. Derek dueled in the unusual positions of playing both pitcher and catcher. (not at the same time) Derek hit .491 in the Steuben County League with 17 RBI's and a .580 on base average. Derek was 5-2 for the Lakers of Hammondsport with a 1.40 ERA. Derek was the Division I Bird's Eye Player of the Year in Class D for Steuben County this past season. |
