Hornellsville house destroyed by fire

HORNELLSVILLE - A home that was being remodeled was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning, Sept. 9.

Arkport firefighters were called out to a structure fire at 7551 Doorley Road at about 4 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Dwight Smith.

"Obviously, it's a total loss," Smith said, pointing to the burned-out shell of the house. "It was fully involved when we got here."

By sunrise, only a few brick walls were still standing.

A

ccording to firefighters,

the owner of the house is Bonnie Snyder. No one was at the house when the fire began.

"It was being remodeled," Smith said. "They were supposed to move in there at the end of the month."

No one was injured in the blaze, but Smith said one Arkport firefighter was taken to St. James Mercy Hospital because he was having difficulty breathing.

"I heard he was all right," he said.

Another danger came from bullets and shells stored in the house.

"When we got here, there was like some ammunition popping off," he said.

A contractor's equipment trailer was damaged by the heat, but the contents are OK, Smith said.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services.

Firefighters from North Hornell, Fremont, Almond and Canaseraga were at the scene, while South Hornell firefighters were activated at a tanker filling site.
