CAMPBELL - Mike Eckstein knows his team is much better than the sub-.500 record might suggest.
His Campbell-Savona Panthers proved it Friday, Oct. 3, with an inspired come-frombehind effort at home.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Campbell-Savona rallied for a 2-1 victory in overtime against Canisteo-Greenwood. Although Campbell-Savona improved to a modest 3-10-1 record, the Panthers did avenge a 1-0 loss to the Redskins earlier in the season.
The Panthers, who have been hit hard by key injuries this season, may just finally be hitting their stride with the postseason in the not too distant horizon.
"I was very happy with how they played tonight," Eckstein said of his team. "We've lost some games, but we've finally got a full team back. I'm very proud of the guys and how much they hustled tonight. They were down by a goal and they didn't give up. It was a big victory for us. " Kyle Knowles knotted the score for the Panthers on a direct kick in the second half and Adam Metula netted the game-winner halfway through the first overtime period.
"Adam got a nice through ball and he took it right to the goal," Eckstein said. "The ball was wet, the ground was wet, it skipped right through the goalie's hands. It was a nice hard shot, rolling on the ground."
Campbell-Savona goalie Brett Jones turned back 10 Canisteo-Greenwood's John McKibbean made five saves.
Zach Peters put Canisteo- Green- wood (1-1) ahead early with a first-half goal.
" I t ' s just nice to pull off some of these vict ories now," Eckstein said. "It's good to be able to jel at this time of the year with sect ionals coming up. We're a lot better than our record, so it's going to be nice to maybe shock some teams."
