CORNING - A man is behind bars for allegedly intentionally shooting a 13-year-old boy twice in the chest with a BB gun Sunday afternoon while hanging out with friends in a garage on East Market Street Extension.

Rahmel Baptist, 22, of 202 Walter Smith Terrace, Corning, was charged Monday with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child.

Lt. Jeff Heverly said shortly after the incident Rural Metro Ambulance was called to the scene and the victim was taken to Corning Hospital for treatment.

“The injuries were not life-threatening and he was released from the hospital,” Heverly said.

The investigation found Baptist and about eight friends were hanging out Sunday in the garage when the incident took place.

Baptist was arraigned Monday in Corning City Court by Judge Matt McCarthy and sent to the Steuben County Jail on $5,000 cash bail. He will return to the Corning City Court at a later date to answer to the charges.
