ELMIRA - Police are currently investigating a homicide in the Town of Elmira that apparently occurred Wednesday evening, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies were initially dispatched to Draht Hill Road, near the intersection of Jerusalem Hill Road for what was initially reported as a motor vehicle accident, the sheriff’s department said.

Upon arrival, the sheriff’s department said deputies determined that an accident had not occurred and that the victim was deceased due to apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim was lying in the roadway.

The sheriff’s department said that a passerbyer initially reported it as an accident after witnessing someone laying in the road and believing they may have been struck by a vehicle.

The victim has been identified as Robyn R. Roper, 33, of the Bronx.

The sheriff’s department said it is currently pursuing several leads at this time.

The sheriff’s department is asking anyone that may have come into contact or seen Roper in the past 48-hours to contact the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 607-737-2933.

The sheriff’s department additionally requests that anyone that was in the area of the East Hill Volunteer Fire Department near Jerusalem Hill Road and Draht Hill Road between 6-8 p.m. Wednesday to contact investigators at the above phone number.
