CORNING - Steuben County Sheriff elect Jim Allard announce Thursday that John D. McNelis will be appointed Steuben County Undersheriff effective Jan. 1.
McNelis, 51, completed his law enforcement career as a criminal investigator with the Wayland State Police - retiring in 2011.
Allard said most recently McNelis has been a member of the Canisteo Police Department, serving as a School Resource Officer, grant writer and training director.
“We are excited to have a person of John’s experience and ability join the team at the Sheriff’s Office,” Allard said. “We look forward to working with John and continuing to provide professional law enforcement services to the residents of Steuben County.”
McNelis, a Hornell native, began his his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Officer. He later worked as a patrol officer for the City of Hornell.
He then joined the New York State Police and served as a trooper, with an assignment on the Governor’s Dignitary Protection Detail in New York City before being appointed to the New York State Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
McNelis has been married to his wife, Beth, for 23 years and the couple has three children, Allard said. He is currently the President of the Hornell City School District Board of Education and is active in the Hornell community.
