ELMIRA - Elmira Police are investigating the use of fake U.S. currency notes at several locations in and around Elmira.

Captain Anthony A. Alvernaz said the notes have several distinguishing characteristics that may help to identify them prior to being placed into circulation unexpectedly.

• The serial numbers have some digits that are backwards.

• The president’s name that should be associated with the denomination is incorrect.

• The name of the landmark pictured on the back of the notes are incorrect.

• The notes have “COPY” printed on them.

Alvernaz said the notes range in dominations; however $20 and $100 notes have been the majority reported.

Counterfeit pens are successful in identifying these notes. Local merchants are encouraged to be vigilant in monitoring their intake of cash in an effort to protect themselves from fraudulent activity.

Anyone with information about these notes are requested to contact the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626.
