CORNING | Twenty-four artists. Fifty artworks each, created over 45 days.
171 Cedar Arts Center’s brand-new summer fundraiser is already ambitious, even before the doors open to potential buyers.
The Summer Mosaic will feature 1,200 pieces of art for sale (for those who haven’t already done the math) over four days in 171’s Houghton Gallery. The fundraiser will start Thursday with a Private Preview night at 5:30 p.m.
“We’re excited, and a little nervous,” said 171 Executive Director Lynn Dates. “When you do a new fundraiser, (it’s) really nerve-wracking.”
The art on sale ranges from $20 to $295, with most prices at the lower end of that range.
“Everything is really very reasonable,” Dates said.
The works are designed in a six-inch by six-inch space, and most artist’s collections are tied to a singular theme or style.
Tickets are $70, but that includes food and beverages by Cugini Café, music by violinist Michelle Nishimoto, VIP gift bags and a live auction.
But most importantly, Dates said, it’s a chance to get first pick of the art on sale.
Friday at 7 p.m. will be the Mosaic Bash.
Again, there’s a cost for entry, this time $50, which includes music by the Rapid River Boys Band and food by chef Brud Holland. There will also be a cash bar.
Saturday and Sunday is a free-for-all sale, called the New Moon sale.
The gallery will be open to the public, and works will be available for sale to anyone who wishes to attend.
The artists will receive 70 percent of the sale prices, with 171 taking a 30 percent commission, which Dates said is fairly standard for a non-profit gallery.
171’s tradition summer fundraiser, the Artful Raffle, has been around for years, and Dates said it was getting “a little dusty.”
She had a plan to shake things up with a new event -- but first she had to convince the board of directors.
“I had to assure my board, ‘Trust me on this,’” Dates said.
Works will be on sale from the following artists: Rebecca Finch, Elizabeth Whitehouse, Cynthia Cratsley, Amanda Warren, Lynn Rhoda Dates, Karen Vogler, Lucretia West, Laura Jaen Smith, Bridget Bossart van Otterloo, Daniel McPheeters, Vani Akula, Jill Schiller, Colleen McCall, Ann Recotta, Beth Landin, Marc Rubin, Filomena Jack, Mary Perry, Brud Holland, Lee O’Connell, Alicia Herbst, Aprille Nace, Annemiek Haralson and Kina Mushumbusi.
