ELMIRA -- Elmira Corning Regional Airport will offer outbound flights to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey beginning in 2018.

The flights will be serviced by United Airlines.

“Newark is a terrific hub with many places to go,” said Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli. “It really is a great upgrade.”

“We promised the community this when we lost American, and when we lost Philadelphia, that we were going to come with another hub, and I believe that the hub we have now with Newark is about as good as it gets.”

“This airport’s a real community asset,” said Corning Enterprises President G. Thomas Tranter Jr. “With this additional hub and flights, it’s going to be terrific going forward and give more options to the traveling public, which is what we desperately need.”

Beginning April 9, 2018, flights to Newark Liberty via United Airlines will depart at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Flights departing from Newark Liberty to Elmira Corning will depart at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Each flight will be around one hour and 25 minutes.

Customers may begin making reservations online now.

Newark Liberty is located about 15 miles from Manhattan with more than 30 carriers operating out of the airport. The airport has flights available to destinations all around the country as well as worldwide.

Santulli said officials expect the new flight to lead to passenger growth. He also said the airport plans to advertise in the Broome County area where the county’s biggest airport -- the Greater Binghamton Airport -- offers only one Delta Connection flight to Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
