Bath Village Mayor John Stranges is stepping down after less than a year in office.
Stranges announced Friday he would leave office effective March 31.
“I usually always finish my commitments but in this case my decision is what is best for me,” Stranges said, in a prepared statement.
Stranges declined later to say why he was stepping down mid-term.
The announcement means trustees will select an interim mayor to finishthe final year of the two-year term, with voters weighing in during the March 2014 village election.
A former village trustee, Stranges announced last year he would not run for mayor, but was the only mayoral candidate selected by the village Republican caucus. He ran unopposed.
Stranges said his decision to leave office was final.
“I’m not going to change my mind this time,” he said.
Since his election, Stranges has emphasized the need to develop the area’s economy, in particular chairing a joint economic development committee composed of officials from the village and town of Bath, and village of Savona. It will be up to the villages and town if he continues to work in that committee, Stranges said.
Stranges said he believes he has worked to brought people and groups together.
“I am thrilled at how great our team has been working together,” he said. “The village is blessed with a lot of caring department heads and employees.”
