Officials are calling for emergency electric restrictions for Bath Electric customers due to a problem at the Wilson Avenue substation.
According to Matthew Hunter, director of Bath Electric, the system sustained damage to equipment at the Wilson Avenue substation at 7:30 p.m. Saturday that resulted in a widespread power outage. Power was restored to all customers around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
The load from Wilson Avenue was shifted to a pair of other substations in the Village of Bath to keep electric service on line.  The electric network's reduced capacity, from the Wilson Avenue loss, cannot support the current load on the system, Hunter said.
During heavy demand periods, the Bath Electric System needs rolling blackouts and load stripping until repairs can be made at the Wilson Avenue site.
Until further notice, Bath Electric customers are asked to make every effort to comply with the following, to reduce the likelihood of rolling blackouts in the village:
- Set Electric heat to less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit
- Freezers and fridges on after 9 pm off before 7 am
- Shut off and unplug all appliances that include but are not limited to the following:
Electric ovens
Electric hot water heaters
Electric clothes dryers
Clothes washing machines
Dishwashers
Microwaves
Consumer electronics
"Please do not call 911 for information on the outage, use 911 only for emergencies," Hunter wrote in a news release. "Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding in this very important matter. We will work diligently to restore the network to normal operations as soon as practical."
