Nearly 68 miles of county roads are slated for maintenance work this year, at a cost of $1.2 million.
Steuben County Public Works Commissioner Vincent Spagnoletti told the county Legislature’s Public Works Committee scheduled work ranges from a 2-inch overlay on County Road 44 in Corning to crack sealing on County Road 76 in the town of Urbana.
This year, maintenance projects have been prioritized, with actual work based on local and state funding the county has been told to expect, Spagnoletti told the committee.
In the event state funds are cut, roads lower on the priority list will delayed until 2011, he said.
Another $200,000 has been set aside for emergency repairs, according to the department’s plan.
This year the department’s emphasis will be on construction work, with $4.2 million set aside to build 48.8 miles of roads.
Included in the construction schedule are projects carried over from last year.
Topping the construction list is County Road 120 between the towns of Lindley and Caton, which was delayed last year in order to work on other county roads.
County Road 70A, a route parallel to Interstate Highway 86, is in line for a major overhaul.
The road runs through several towns and had been considered last year for work paid out of federal stimulus money. Instead the federal funds were used for County Route 14 in the town of Howard.
This year, more than 16 miles of County Route 70A is scheduled for major construction work or maintenance.
Spagnoletti said if more federal stimulus money becomes available this spring, it will be used for construction work on 70A.
Another $869,000 will be paid out for bridge, box culverts and pipe culverts projects this year, according to Spagnoletti.
