On January 21, 2012, the Prattsburgh Varsity Club supported a community organized fund raising event for PCS alums Billy Fitzwater and Jim Campbell. Billy coached baseball at PCS for many years and Jim has been the Head custodian since 1994. Billy and Jim are both battling cancer.
The day started off with an alumni game that was organized by former coach, Jim Burke. Almost fifty former players participated in the event, with most graduating years represented from the class of 1959 all the way through the class of 2011. Spectators filled the gymnasium and offered donations at the door for both Billy and Jim.
Immediately following the alumni game, there was a benefit dinner catered by the Robbins Nest. Additional funds were raised at the dinner as many community members donated the deserts that were sold.
During the weeks leading up to the event, our PCS winter athletes were involved in a “Free-Throw-A-Thon” the day before the event. Athletes from the Prattsburgh youth programs up through the varsity players participated. Each athlete gathered pledges prior to shooting thirty free throws. The Free-Throw-A-Thon alone raised over $5,000 for Jim and Billy!
Proceeds from the dinner, admission to the game, and the money raised by the Prattsburgh athletes totaled $10,500 which will go toward Jim’s and Billy’s care and treatment. It was simply amazing to see the overwhelming support that the Prattsburgh community showed for two of their long-time family members.
