Forgery

BATH | Troopers in Bath arrested Sammy Jo Hojnoski of 204 East William St., Bath and charged her with second-degree forgery. Troopers allege that in December on 2009 Hojnoski stole a personal check from a personal acquaintance, filled it out and forged the name of the owner of the check. After completing the check Hojnoski took it to a local store and cashed it. Hojnoski was arraigned in the town of Avoca and committed to the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

Burglary
AVOCA | Troopers in Bath recently arrested two men for their involvement in a burglary at the Avoca Gas Storage Project. The men, William J. Trenchard of 87 Buffalo Street, Hornell and Edward C. Lasnick of 9247 Ellison Lane, Wallace were both charged with one count of third-degree burglary. Allegedly during late May of 2011 Trenchard and Lasnick entered a warehouse at the Avoca Gas Storage Project on Mackey Road, Avoca and stole cooper wire. Both men were arraigned in the town of Avoca court and released on their own recognizance. The investigation into thefts at the Avoca Gas Storage Project will continue.

Criminal contempt, promoting prison contraband

BATH | Deputies report the arrest of a town of Corning man Monday. John French Spencer II, 26, was arrested for second-degree criminal contempt and second-degree promoting prison contraband. Allegedly Inmate Spencer violated a city of Corning court order of protection while at the Steuben County Jail. Allegedly Spencer was found in possession of items that are considered contraband during a cell search. Spencer was issued an appearance ticket and will appear in the town of Bath court at a later date.

Deputies request assistance
TROUPSBURG | Deputies are requesting assistance from the public in acquiring information concerning a property damage hit and run motor vehicle accident that occurred on Jan. 28 at about 8:10 p.m. at 1179 State Route 36 in the town of Troupsburg. It was reported that a large truck, possibly a box style which left the roadway and struck a large residential mail box and several road signs. The vehicle will possibly be a dark gray/charcoal in color GMC of Chevrolet. The vehicle will have moderate damage to the passenger side and will be missing it’s passenger side mirror. Anyone with information can call anonymously to the Sheriff’s Office at 607-622-3901 refer to case number 1584-12.

Possession
HORNELLSVILLE | Deputies report the arrest of Anthony S. Lowenfeld, 22, of Simmons Circle in Export PA. On Monday deputies discovered Lowenfeld to be in possession of suspected marijuana just off County Route 66 in the town of Hornellsville. Lowenfeld was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Hornellsville court at a later date.

Forgery
TUSCARORA | Deputies report the arrest of a North Chili resident on January 27 after an investigation into a report of forgery in the town of Tuscarora. Justin H. Hand, 22, of West Side Drive in North Chili was arrested on four counts of forgery and once count of petit larceny. The charges allege that Hand took a book of checks from Ralph Hand in the town of Tuscarora in December of 2011 and proceeded to write a series of checks to himself and then signed the victim’s name. It was found that Hand wrote two checks to the town of Woodhull on two separate dates and two checks in the town of Tuscarora on two separate dates. Hand was proceeded and released with appearance tickets to appear in the town of Woodhull court at a later date and appearance tickets to appear in the town of Tuscarora court at a later date to answer the charges.

Burglary investigation

ADDISON | Troopers report that on January 28 they received a report of a burglary to a residence located on Steuben St., in the village of Addison. The residence was entered and jewelry, a lamp, a clock and a laptop computer were stolen. Additionally a white four door 2011 Buick Lucerne NY: DNK3675 was stolen from the garage. It is believed that this crime occurred in the early morning hours of the 28th. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Inv. Chris Wilkinson at 607-962-3282.

Welfare fraud
CORNING | Troopers and Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Department report the arrest of an individual following a joint team investigation. Kevin M. Shelp, 42, of 26 Wilson St., Corning was arrested and charged with one count of fifth-degree welfare fraud. Shelp did commit a fraudulent welfare act and obtained public assistance benefits that he was not entitled to. Shelp was given an appearance ticket for the village of Bath court at a later date.
