The Town of Pulteney’s dog control officer has been arrested on a felony charge for allegedly serving an altered court order.
John L. Ballam, 54, of Gloades Corner Road, Pulteney, was charged Tuesday with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a class D felony. He was released from custody on his own recognizance.
According to New York State Police in Bath, Ballam’s wife, 48-year-old Sherri A. Ballam, altered a court order that had been issued by a Pulteney Town Court justice. The court order was connected to a dog-related issue in the town.
Allegedly knowing the document had been altered, Ballam served the forged document on the owner of the dog in question.
For her alleged role, Sherri Ballam was charged with second-degree forgery, a class D felony. She was also released on her own recognizance.
State police said the incident occurred last October, but the alleged crime wasn’t reported to troopers until last month.
Troopers said they believe John Ballam is still working as the town’s dog control officer.
