A 23-year-old inmate at the Steuben County Jail has been charged with felony assault for allegedly biting a corrections officer.
Eric G. Drake, formerly of Fulton Avenue in Hornell, is accused of biting an unidentified corrections officer during an altercation. He was charged with second-degree assault, a class D felony.
The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Drake was allegedly involved in an altercation with another inmate, at which time the corrections officer stepped in to break it up.
As a corrections officer restrained Drake, Drake bit him on the hand, police said. After being bitten, the corrections officer continued to restrain Drake, causing injury to the corrections officer’s elbow, police said. The injured officer continued to restrain Drake until additional corrections officers arrived to help, police said.
The injured corrections officer was taken to Ira Davenport Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
At the time of the incident, Drake was serving a 90-day sentence for petit larceny.
