Steuben County officials expect to streamline their public works shared services programs pending legislative approval later this month.
The decades-old program now allows the county to team up with other municipalities and agencies to share equipment and labor, at a cost savings to both groups. However, each separate program must be approved by the full legislative board before it is launched.
A more efficient way to share services would be for the board to authorize its Public Works Commissioner to act on the county Legislature’s behalf, according to Deputy County Attorney Sean Corey.
The proposal was approved by the county Legislature’s Public Works Committee Monday and will be up for a vote by the full board Dec. 17.
The services include:
Joint Ownership and Operation of Equipment:
Pavement striping truck: Schuyler and Yates Counties.
Gravel crusher: Towns of Cameron, Jasper, Tuscarora and Woodhull.
Shared Use of Equipment:
Towns, state departments of Transportation and Environmental Conservation, and BOCES: Dozers, trucks, lowboy, track excavators, loaders, shoulder widener, chip seal machine and asphalt zipper. Towns share trucks and other equipment with county.
Schuyler County loans message boards to Steuben.
BOCES: Shares equipment with the towns and County.
Equipment repair shop repairs some equipment for Towns.
County fuel tanks are shared with towns and other agencies.
Flood repair; snowplowing; mowing; bridge construction road paving; signs and guide rails; bidding: mobile work program.
