A 13-year-old left a Glove House facility in Bath, stole a car and fled the area on Saturday afternoon, triggering a police chase on Interstate 86 that ended in the Town of Big Flats, police say.
According to Painted Post-based New York State Police, troopers spotted the stolen vehicle heading east on I-86 in the Town of Erwin.
Troopers attempted to pull the car over on I-86 in the Town of Corning, but the youth refused to stop.
The vehicle was eventually stopped around 3:30 p.m. on I-86 near the Steuben County-Chemung County line, between Exit 48 (East Corning) and Exit 49 (Big Flats). The youth, who was not identified, was taken into custody without incident.
Multiple police cruisers surrounded the car, which appeared to be a Chrysler 300M with tinted windows, and traffic slowed as the driving lane was shut down.
According to emergency communications, there was a minor collision between a police cruiser and the stolen car as the pursuit reached its conclusion, but that was not confirmed by state police.
The youth was sent to be held at the Rochester Children’s Center, by order of Chemung County Family Court, troopers report.
The investigation is continuing, and criminal charges are pending.
State police were assisted by the Corning Police Department, Horseheads Police Department and the Chemung County Sheriff ’s Office.
