Hammondsport: Trustees seek input on park

Hammondsport trustees have called a community meeting Saturday to discuss the future of the village’s Grape Street Park.

The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the park, which was closed this winter by the Village Board after years of complaints from neighbors about vandalism, vulgar language and misbehavior by the kids that hang out there, and trash being thrown in neighbors’ yards.

However, some residents are pushing for the park to be reopened, saying it’s really the only park for kids in the village - and that all children shouldn’t be punished for the behavior of a few bad apples.

The park includes a basketball court, skateboarding park and playground.

All ages are welcome at Saturday’s meeting. Trustees would like to hear ideas on how to keep the park safe and clean, and stop vandalism in the park and neighboring properties, before deciding whether to reopen the park.

The rain date for the meeting is 2 p.m. Sunday.
