Milk prices up, crops a mixed bag
ALBANY | Prices received by New York producers for milk sold during September were up from a month earlier, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office.
Dairy farmers in the Empire State received an average of $19.60 per hundredweight of milk sold during September, up $1 from August but $3.40 less than September 2011.
Crop prices were mixed, with grain corn, at $8.28 per bushel, up 25 cents from August and 78 cents above September 2011 prices. Hay averaged $131 per ton, unchanged from last month but up $32 from September 2011. Potatoes averaged $14.50 per cwt, down $3 from last year. Apples, at $60.20 per cwt., were up $20.90 from September 2011.
KLA sends exemption request to Gov.
PULTENEY |The Keuka Lake Association recently sent a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo asking him to consider the Keuka Lake Watershed and its 4000-foot buffer as exempt from hydrofracking.
The exemption is supported by all of the town supervisors and village mayors and the majority of wineries in the Keuka Lake Watershed.
The area includes the towns of Pulteney, Urbana and Wayne.
