J. Gaven Hurley, Rotary District 7120 Governor, recently made his official visit to the Bath Rotary Club.
Hurley was first introduced to Rotary while playing on the Rotary sponsored Pony League baseball team in Cranford, NJ and singing in his school’s vocal quartet at a Rotary meeting. In 1982 he joined the Rotary Club of Morristown, NJ where he served as President in 1988-89.
In 1993 he and his wife Kathleen, Professor of Harp at the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, moved to the Rochester area where he joined the Pittsford Rotary Club.
In addition to holding many club offices and chairing many committees, he introduced the Dictionary Project to District 7120.
In his address to the local Rotarians he spoke about the Rotary International theme, Peace Through Service. He stated that the 2012-2013 Rotary International President, Sakuji Tanaka from Saitama, Japan stresses that the power of service lies at the very heart of Rotary.
Before his presentation Hurley asked those Rotarians present who had served in the military to stand and be recognized by their fellow Rotarians; this group included Al Johnson, Ernie Peltz, Greg Schultz, and Neal Wrinkle as well as visiting Hammondsport Rotarian, Larry Bates.
Finally, he presented Becky Stranges, Bath Rotary Club President, a copy of the book Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary, and reminded the local Rotarians they make a difference every day.
Also in attendance at the club’s luncheon meeting was George “Skip” Miller from Naples, Assistant Governor Area 3.
Stranges thanked the District Governor for his visit and inspirational address. She announced that in order to promote literacy, highly valued by Rotary, a book would be given to the local library or some other institution or organization in his honor.
Anyone interested in more information about Rotary should contact Becky Stranges, President, at 776-5994 or bstranges@hotmail.com or John Stranges, Vice-President and Membership Chair, at 776-5994 or r j63stranges@gmail.com.
