Students took time out of their Veterans Day Holiday to assist older individuals in the Pulteney area.
This year, Hammondsport students residing in Pulteney assisted with leaf raking and yard clean-up for three older residents.
Mr. Jim Derr, Guidance Counselor at Hammondsport High School, made the personal contact with students requesting their assistance, and four students came forward to help.
The school is committed to continuing to offer intergenerational volunteer activities to students in the future.
This activity was coordinated by Kathy Burns, Pulteney Aging in Place Coordinator, under a project initiated by Steuben Senior Services Fund, Inc.
The Pulteney Aging in Place project promotes collaboration between agencies and organizations to provide various services to older Pulteney residents allowing them to age in place in their own homes for as long as possible.
Services include, but are not limited to, transportation, grocery shopping, home delivered meals, friendly visiting, assistance with household chores, etc.
The latest initiative involves the development of a community garden in the Town of Pulteney.
If you need services in the Pulteney area or if you would like to volunteer to assist those in need, call Kathy Burns at the Office for Aging at 607-664-2298 or email her at  kathleenb@co.steuben.ny.us
