Col. (Ret) William S. Koenemann, 71, died November 15, 2012. He was born in Bath, NY on April 6, 1941 and graduated from Avoca High School in Avoca, NY in June 1959. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio in 1963, where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He earned masters’ degrees in business administration and management and education. He retired as an Air Force Colonel after serving for 28 years. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He also received the decorations and awards of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Legion of Merit. He retired as 5th Weather Wing Commander, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, after Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He moved to The Villages from Yorktown, Virginia in 2005.
He was predeceased by his father, Stacy P. Koenemann; mother, Amelia “Amy” Newton Koenemann; and brother, Navy Lieutenant James N. Koenemann.
Survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Phyllis Dockstader Koenemann; two wonderful daughters, Stacy Jude (husband, Benjamin) of Chesterfield, MO and Karen Koenemann (husband, David Lindley) of Leadville, CO; two grandchildren, Dakota “Cody” Jude and Connor Jude; one aunt, Carol Koenemann of Rochester, NY; three cousins, Lois Gallen of Owen Sound, ON, Canada, Ruth Ruch (husband, Terry) of Barrie, ON, Canada and Jean Koenemann of Rochester, NY.
He enjoyed his family, golf, sailing, tennis, shuffleboard, bocce ball, instructing pickle ball and teaching meteorology courses at Emery-Riddle University and The Villages Life Long Learning Center. He was a member of the American Legion Post #347, past president of the Sebring Convertible Club, golf coordinator for Baily Trail Tuesday Couples Group, Eagleview Social Club and Couples Sunday Golf.
A Celebration of William’s Life was held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 at the Hiers Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd., The Villages. Inurnment with Military Honors followed in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. Donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice (The Villages) 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162.
