A local developer plans to open a Taco Bell restaurant on a vacant parcel of land near the main entrance of Walmart in Erwin, and construction could begin this spring.

A preliminary review of the proposed 4,000-square-foot project, which would house Taco Bell and another business, was completed Monday night by the Erwin Town Planning Board. The second business has not been determined, officials said.

Erwin Town Manager Rita McCarthy said the town could give final approval to the project in early March, and construction could being soon after.

“It will be a great addition to the area,” McCarthy said.

Kashyap Shah, a local developer and Corning Inc. employee, would be the owner of the new eatery, located next to ALDI and Five Star Bank. He could not be reached Tuesday for comment. The project engineer is Bergmann Associates of Rochester.

It is not known how many people the new businesses would employ.

According to the preliminary site plans, Taco Bell, with a drive-thru, and the other business would each use half of the building.

McCarthy said Taco Bell will likely be the latest project in growing Gang Mills. There is an ongoing $9 million project to build a 90-room Hampton Inn at the old Kmart site. The 92,000-square-foot Kmart building, vacant since early 2003, was razed in late 2012.

Town Supervisor David Erwin has called the Hampton Inn project a major milestone toward the town’s vision of a vibrant town center.

The center, which includes the Erwin Town Hall, the American Twin Harley-Davidson and other buildings, is viewed as an anchor for other developers looking to invest in Gang Mills.
