Students at the VEW Primary School took a little time off from their basketball unit to learn about Super Bowl XLVII. They discussed the two teams that would be competing for the trophy and were allowed to choose the team that they predicted would win by signing their name on a poster of the team’s helmet.
Mr. Bethka and Mrs. Rossi took the lesson a little further. A map of the United States was hung on the wall. Students were shown where Bath, NY is. They were then shown where Baltimore, Maryland is and that it is South of Bath 264 miles away. It would take approximately five hours to drive there. Obviously, the students also learned that San Francisco is in California and is 2,727 miles away. 41 hours (almost two days) in a car traveling West to get there. Students were shown where the Superdome is and were given the stats for that. Driving 1,316 miles Southwest for approximately 21 hours to New Orleans, Louisiana they would finally reach the stadium and would be able to cheer on their favorite team.
This lesson integrated many subjects and added a little excitement and insight to one of America’s biggest sporting events.
