Arc of Steuben officials announced that Brad Longwell has been named Associate of the Month for January.
Longwell works in the maintenance department for the Arc of Steuben. Officials said that after the area was blanketed with snow from two snowstorms in late December, Longwell worked hard to ensure that Arc associates and the people that they serve were safe. According to Jessica Dunham, who nominated Longwell, he not only cleared the snow from the houses he was responsible for in Hornell, but he also took on the responsibility of plowing at the Arc’s Industrial Park facility as well as other residences in Bath and Hornell.
“He did an excellent job making sure we were ready for the storm here at the VanScoter Street residence and even dropped off ice melt after the storm started,” Dunham said. “That night, he also was willing to plow out the bus that one of the individuals rides when they were caught in the snow and Hornell City plows were busy with other clean up.”
Dunham said that Longwell worked into the early morning to make sure the Industrial Park facility was clear of snow, while still keeping up with his responsibilities in Bath and Hornell.
“He is always so quick to take care of anything that needs to be taken care of here at VanScoter and all I ever hear are countless remarks about the quality of work he does and how quickly things get fixed,” Dunham said. “He has been really great about ensuring all the individuals’ safety with the snow control. He makes sure our sidewalks are very clear and has even knocked down the icicles hanging from the roof.”
The Arc of Steuben was founded in 1964 by a group of parents advocating for the education of their children, each of whom had a disability. The Arc is a private not-for-profit organization that serves 1,500 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Families can obtain a wide variety of support services ranging from community employment to in-home services. The Arc is people-focused, family-friendly, and community-oriented. The organization actively looks for opportunities to partner with the community and encourages their staff and those served to be positively involved in community life.
