The United Way of the Southern Tier raised more than $4.6 million last year, officials announced last Thursday.
The total was down slightly from the record set in 2011, in part because of the closure of Sikorsky. The Big Flats employer contributed $40,000 last year.
“Given the closure of Sikorsky ... and the lingering high unemployment rate, we really see many positives in this result,” said Steve Hughes, vice president of Resource Development. “Our annual recognition event allows us to say thank you to our corporate partners and workplace volunteers who help us unite the community around our mission of helping people.”
Thursday, the United Way celebrated its successful campaign with a luncheon attended by almost 250. At the luncheon, the following individuals and organizations received special awards for their contributions:
• Veronica Kastenhuber, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Outstanding Company Coordinator for Teamwork.
• Valerie Saltsman, Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, Outstanding Company Coordinator for Organization.
• Maria Ball, Wegmans; and Tammy Wise, St. James Mercy Hospital, Outstanding Company Coordinators for Enthusiasm.
• Marty Castellana and Maureen Blaker, Corning Incorporated; and Shana and Mike Graham, Stamped Fittings.
