Troopers are investigating what caused a tractor-trailer to catch fire Tuesday night, Feb. 12, on Interstate 86 in Campbell.
According to New York State Police in Painted Post, Roger Helmer, 57, of Washington state, was driving east on I-86 shortly before 9 p.m. when he thought one of his rig’s tires exploded. He pulled the tractor-trailer over and discovered an axle on fire.
The rig was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. It was destroyed by the blaze.
There were no injuries.
The fire forced authorities to close a portion of I-86 for several hours.
Helmer and a dog riding with him were assisted by the American Red Cross.
