A 35-year-old Hornell man has been arrested for breaking into the Avoca post office and causing damage inside.
Rex N. Oney, of Canisteo Street, allegedly broke into the post office Friday, Jan. 27, tore items off the walls and put a hole in a wall that separates the public and private areas of the building.
Bath-based troopers first made contact with Oney around 2:30 a.m. Friday after a caller told police an intoxicated man – Oney – was causing a disturbance at a residence in Avoca, police said. Troopers talked to Oney, who said he was trying to obtain a ride because his car had broken down.
Troopers determined Oney had not committed a crime, and he was provided courtesy transportation to the Pilot Truck Stop, where he said he could receive assistance.
After dropping Oney off, troopers received a report of a burglary at the post office in Avoca.
During that investigation, troopers realized Oney had in his possession items taken from the post office.
After further investigation, troopers determined Oney allegedly committed the burglary.
He was located at the truck stop and arrested.
Oney was jailed on $10,000 cash bail. He was charged with third-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
