On November 8 the Corning Community College (CCC) Regional Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new Presidential Scholars program to recruit and retain first-time, full-time applicants ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class, and earning Regents diplomas from an accredited high school in Steuben County, Chemung County, or Schuyler County. The Presidential Scholars program is intended to encourage high-achieving students to attend CCC and maintain the presence of young leadership in our tri-county community.
Further, the Regional Board of Trustees authorized the Corning Community College Development Foundation to secure private funding to support the Presidential Scholars program. The Development Foundation oversees all fund-raising initiatives for CCC; these initiatives will prominently feature the Presidential Scholars program and other scholarships as the highest funding priority. Private scholarships alleviate the financial strain borne by students and their families at this time of economic uncertainty and increasingly tight household budgets.
Recipients of a Presidential Scholars award will complete an Associate in Arts (AA) or Associate in Science (AS) degree with no tuition debt and are guaranteed placement within a SUNY school to complete a Bachelor’s degree. An Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree recipient will complete the degree requirements with no tuition debt. The Presidential Scholars award is equal to New York State (NYS) resident tuition less Pell and TAP grants. The Presidential Scholars program will pay for up to four semesters of NYS resident tuition not covered by Pell or TAP grants.
To be eligible to receive this award scholars must be ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class; have applied for admission and filed FAFSA applications by March 1, 2013; enroll in an AA, AS, or AAS degree program; complete at least 12 credit hours each semester (fall and spring semesters only) with a 3.0 semester grade point average; maintain a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average; and complete their AA, AS, or AAS degree requirements through no more than four (4) semesters of study over two (2) contiguous years.
