Steuben County Legislature Chairman Joe Hauryski has proclaimed Friday to be a day of mourning for those who died in Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. Hauryski's proclamation comes in response to Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy’s invitation to all Americans to join in the state’s day of mourning.
Hauryski asked residents to observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday. He also asked places of worship and other groups able to do so to toll their bells 26 times in honor of the 20 children and six teachers who died Dec. 14 in Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Conn.
The county memorial will take place at the same time as memorials in Connecticut and elsewhere in the region.
