Stay alert while driving in winter

To the Editor,
The Steuben County Traffic Safety Board wants to remind everyone that winter driving conditions are still present. Complacency can overtake common sense when winter weather is not static. One day there’s black ice, the next snow, and then it’s light jacket weather.
Be prepared to leave for appointments early. Undoubtedly there is a crazy person ahead without common sense and is in the midst of starting a very bad day with a red and blue light police special.
Give the NYSDOT snowplow drivers a break. You have the ability to see them better than they can see you. Buffeting against a guide rail will not improve your vehicle’s value.
High profile vehicles - pick-up trucks, vans, cross-over vehicles included, should slow down when it’s windy. Save the tipping and toppling for amusement park rides. Watch for flying ice and snow from tops of tractor trailer vehicles. They have been known to mutilate windshields of tailgaters.
Keep windows, lights and license plates clear of snow and debris. Yes, you too can win traffic tickets, if you ignore this. Be neighborly. Help your elderly or injured friends by brushing snow off their vehicles too.
Safe driving saves you money. Court fines and fees have not decreased. Attempting to deal with your no-fault insurance claim for medical care is a pain that medication cannot help. Better yet if you don’t need to be on the highway during bad weather, stay home. Don’t be a target for half-wit drivers. If you read this and think we are preaching to the choir, give a copy of this to a person you think needs a reality check. Just think, soon we will all be watching out for motorcycles and bicycles. Thanks for your time.
