State police have arrested a Maryland man suspected of committing a robbery at Kay Jewelers in the Arnot Mall on Thursday, Feb. 21.
William T. Howard, 22, of Laurel, MD, was charged with third-degree robbery following an investigation led by Horseheads based New York State Police. Howard was arrested by the Wellsboro Police Department on a warrant as a fugitive from justice. He was being held Sunday in the Tioga County Jail, awaiting extradition proceedings.
Howard had been staying with a friend on the Mansfield University campus, according to state police.
The Mansfield University campus police also assisted in the case.
Howard allegedly entered Kay Jewelers around 1:30 p.m. Thursday, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a medical mask, and coughing heavily as if he were sick.
He asked a store clerk to look at a matching diamond earring and necklace set, according to state police.
While looking at the earrings, Howard forcibly grabbed the necklace from the employee and ran from the store with the items, worth more than $4,000, state police say.
An image of Howard was captured by surveillance cameras.
