Steuben County has been awarded a $3.1 million competitive grant from the New York Statewide Interoperable Communications Grant Program, which will be used to improve emergency communication systems in the county.
The funds from this grant, sponsored by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, will assist Steuben County in connecting emergency communications towers to the Southern Tier Network fiber infrastructure, creating a radio link with Tioga County, Pa., and purchasing advanced radio networking equipment for the 9-1-1 Center. Each of these tasks will allow Steuben County to leverage innovative technologies to enhance communications for first responders.
Steuben County will begin the project in the coming weeks, with completion slated within a year.
