The four Dairy Institutes, established with New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI) funding, offer best practices learning opportunities that are benefitting farm businesses from western to northern New York.
“New York’s Dairy Institute project leaders report that the concentrated-focus learning opportunities are producing comprehensive benefits to dairy farms across the state,” says NYFVI Managing Director David Grusenmeyer.
The NYFVI provided funding for Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Wyoming County to develop the concept of a dairy education series and the first 10 learning modules that combine classroom, hands-on and on-farm activities to enhance New York dairy farm owner and employee skills.
The Wyoming County Dairy Institute (WCDI) offered its first module in 2007 with additional support from the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors, Cornell University’s PRO-DAIRY Program and Quality Milk Production Services. Alfred State and Genesee Community colleges provide college credits to participants completing study requirements.
Dairy industry professionals and educators teach the practical learning modules that concentrate on a single aspect of dairying, e.g., herdsmanship, milk production, calf care, reproduction, hoof care, farm financial management, nutrient management, and CDL (commercial driver’s license) training for agricultural industry drivers.
Local farms host on-farm, hands-on sessions.
“The Dairy Institutes are all about knowledge gain by drawing on the best resources and specialists, including Cornell University, Alfred State, the Quality Milk program and others,” says Wyoming County Dairy Institute Facilitator Bill Maddison, who helped found New York’s first Dairy Institute.
The Dairy Institutes courses offered across New York State since 2007 have educated more than 979 participants from farms and agribusinesses with some taking multiple courses.
Once the Dairy Institutes are established with New York Farm Viability Institute start-up funding, they become self-sustaining through course registration fees that generally range from $50 to $200.
