One year after Hammondsport was recognized by Budget Travel magazine as “America’s Coolest Small Town,” neighboring Watkins Glen is vying for the 2013 title, with three weeks left to vote.
Watkins Glen is the only town in New York state still in the running this year and one of 15 finalists for the 2013 designation.
State Sen. Tom O’Mara, R-Big Flats has had the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce urge residents from throughout his 58th Senate District to “help show our support for one of our great local small towns and take this opportunity to put the Finger Lakes region on the national and worldwide map once again.”
According to the magazine, Budget Travel readers nominated a record 924 towns from across America this year. That number is now down to 15 finalists. In addition to Watkins Glen, the other finalists are: Bay St.
Louis, Missouri; Camden, Maine; Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin; Flagler Beach, Florida; Glenwood Springs, Colorado; Greenville, Kentucky; Gulf Shores, Alabama; Le Claire, Iowa; Lititz, Pennsylvania; Mount Carroll, Illinois; Put-in-Bay, Ohio; Quincy, California; Shepherdstown, West Virginia; and Travelers Rest, South Carolina.
